Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool

Liverpool Hope University is a University in Liverpool, England. It is the product of the amalgamation of one Protestant and two Roman Catholic teacher training colleges.

History

The origins of Liverpool Hope can be found in the founding of S. Katherine's College (1844) and Notre Dame College (1862). S. Katherine's College was an Anglican teacher training college based in Warrington while Notre Dame College was situated in Liverpool. Later Christ's College of Education was set up in 1964.

In 1980 Notre Dame College and Christ's College were merged to form Christ's and Notre Dame College and it teamed up with S. Katherine's College to form Liverpool Institute of Higher Education. LIHE lasted for fifteen years until in 1995 the name was changed to Liverpool Hope University College.

In the mid-1990's students applied to one of the two colleges: either S. Kath's or CND. Once accepted into a college, accommodation would be provided in the appropriate college. S. Kath's placed its male students in Keswick Hall and the female students in the main building. CND provided accommodation for its students: Andrew, Sherwin and Newman for male students and Angela and Ursula for its female students.

Recently the authorities have changed the names of S. Katherine's College and CND to Hilda Constance Allen and Frances Mary Lescher respectively.

In 2005, Liverpool Hope University College was awarded university status and became Liverpool Hope University.

Famous Students

Willy Russell studied at S. Katharine’s College of Education . His play Educating Rita is based on Liverpool Hope, however, the movie version starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters was filmed at Trinity College, Dublin.

Peter Kilfoyle, Member of Parliament for Liverpool Walton, qualified as a teacher at Christ's College of Education.

Stel Pavlou studied at LIHE when it came under the auspices of the University of Liverpool 19, before it's decision to become a separate University.
